What are Bordeaux Futures or "En Primeur"?
"En Primeur" is the French term for purchasing Bordeaux wines while it is still maturing in barrel.
Wine buyers, critics and representatives traveled to Bordeaux in mid March for the 2010 En Primeur tasting, while the wine is still in the barrel. Once again, the 2010 Bordeaux vintage is being applauded by wine experts as a great vintage in modern history.
The critics are saying... "Bordeaux 2010 is an exceptional vintage"! James Lawther of Decanter.com, was in Bordeaux for the 2010 En Primeur tastings. He has this to say about the 2010 vintage... "Only time will tell if it is better than 2009. "Adding, :The wines of 2010 are more 'classically' defined."
Why buy now?
There are significant advantages to buying futures now, here are a few reasons we think you might want to consider.
- To purchase wines at the initial release prices. Wines re-released after bottling or sold at retail in an excellent vintage will usually be considerably more expensive.
- To secure allocations of small-production wines that may not be commercially available after "En Primeur" release. When they are gone, they are gone.
- To own a wine from the start of its life - provenance is priceless. You know that you bought it and have controlled its storage from the beginning.
- To purchase a birth year vintage for a child, grandchild or godchild.
- To purchase a wedding year vintage.
- To be able to choose large format wines - magnums or double magnums. Or to be able to order half bottles - especially in Sauternes.
- To purchase the latest vintages of a Château that you have followed and purchased over the years. This is especially important for wines where there is always more demand than there is supply.
En Primeur Terms
Bordeaux futures basically work like other market-traded commodities. Investors buy wine that has not yet reached the market. This allows the investor to obtain a potentially rare wine, at a bargain, then watch it increase in value. The wine is still in the barrels, un-bottled, and won't be released for 12 to 18 months. Wine will begin to arrive after about 2 years.
Availability
Many of these wines have very limited availability. Purchases are on a first-come first-served basis and are available by the solid case only (12 bottles unless otherwise noted). Bottle prices are displayed for comparison purposes only and do not indicate that these wines are available by the bottle. 2010 Bordeaux will be delivered in the spring/summer of 2013.
Pricing
Prices are "net", very date sensitive and are subject to change without notice. Case discounts and Connoisseur Club points do not apply.
Payment
Full payment is required to confirm order. Priority for additional limited stock or special wines will be based on client's purchase history.
